College Goal Sunday 2003 was held on February 16, 2003 at 17 sites throughout Kansas and the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area. This year's event saw a 155% increase over last year's numbers with 1382 total number of attendees and only 151 volunteers. We were very pleased with the success of CGS this year. Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers, we were able to help everyone that showed up, but we quickly realized this year that were way undermanned when it came to volunteer help. Many sites had so many folks show up at 2:00 that rather than being able to help everyone one on one they quickly realized a group presentation would be more beneficial with an opportunity for questions afterwards.
Our increase in numbers this year was the combined result of two things, 1) we had better pre-event advertising in both local newspapers and radio and 2) and probably the most important key, was the hard work of our site coordinators who took time out of their busy schedules to visit as many high school counselors as possible. On their visits they delivered posters, brochures, promotional cups and small packets of information about CGS that each high school counselor could use as a tool to aid them in promoting CGS to their students. Based on information provided on the evaluations 47.7% of the respondents said they heard about CGS from their high school counselors.
To prepare for next year's CGS it's clear we will need many more volunteers. I hope everyone will consider volunteering and/or joining the CGS committee. I think there are plans in work to utilize the actual committee members more this year than we have in the past. Please consider joining in on the fun!!
With the growth of this year's event and the validation that personal vistis to the high schools definitely helped to increase our numbers this year it became clear that we needed to take a close look at CGS, its' goals, its' target group, how we've been promoting the event and whether we even want to continue with CGS.
Early in March several site coordinators, Barbara and myself met in Salina to hash out the future of CGS. First and foremost, everyone was in total agreement that CGS should continue. We felt that the number of families helped makes the events continuation necessary. From there we tackled what the goal of CGS was and who our target group was.
I want to offer a huge THANK YOU to the entire College Goal Sunday Committee, all of the site coordinators and all the volunteers who took time out of their busy schedules to help with this year's CGS, without each and everyone of you it would not have been the huge success that it was!! THANK YOU!!!
