From the President: Annita Huff
Greetings my fellow members! This is my first newsletter message to you as President, and I must say it is an exercise that provokes wonder and inspiration for what we are as an organization. First I would like to welcome any new members. We hope that you will become active in our organization by serving on one of our many committees, or simply by offering your support to our leadership. I would like to report that the KASFAA Spring 2002 Conference in Topeka was held at the Capitol Plaza Hotel on April 3-5th. Our theme, "Feeling Groovy - That 70's Conference" was carried out in many fun and unique ways. Registration for the spring event totaled 223 with 31 vendors. In addition, the KASFAA live auction raised $2200 for four $550 scholarships awarded to: The University of Kansas, Wichita Area Technical School, University of Kansas Medical Center, and Salina Area Technical School. I want to offer a big thank you to everyone who helped with the spring conference whether it was as a presenter, moderator, exhibitor, committee chair, co-chair, member, and/or simply an attendee. It takes all of us to make the conference. Additionally, I want to extend my special thanks to the Conference Planning Committee for their hard work and dedication. Our President-Elect, Chris Johnson and I will be compiling the KASFAA Committee Volunteer Forms by May 1. If you have NOT volunteered yet, please download, print and submit the volunteer form or simply e-mail me at: zzahuff@washburn.edu. I want our committees to be over-flowing with volunteers! We will notify you after our May 10th Budget Planning Board of Directors meeting in Topeka. REMEMBER to register at www.rmasfaa.org for RMASFAA Summer Institute in Colorado Springs, May 31 - June 7. This wonderful training opportunity is held at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Training is offered in Neophyte, Interadvanced and Student Loan Professional tracks. Pre-conference Professional Development and Leadership training is also offered. Once again, KASFAA will be sending four lucky individuals to receive this outstanding and highly respected training. They are: Robin Wiebe from Southwest Kansas Technical School, Kathy Blau from Garden City Community College, Brenda Meagher from Bethany College, and Vicki Johansen from Fort Hays State University. NEW this year, the NAASFAA Best Practices Symposium will be offered in conjunction with the RMASFAA Summer Institute. The three critical subject areas are: Enrollment Management, Legal Issues, and E-Commerce Customer Service. What an opportunity for professional development! My question or challenge for you is what have you done to get involved in next year's (2003) Reauthorization? It is up to you to offer feedback and opinions to NASFAA, RMASFAA, KASFAA or directly to your legislators. Robert Gamez, past president, currently serves on the NASFAA Federal Issues Committee and will welcome your input into this important issue. Finally, join me in congratulating your new Board of Directors for 2002-2003:
