The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools has formed a partnership with the Kansas Award for Excellence as a part of the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQUIP). This is an alternative continuous quality improvement program to the traditional method of accreditation. As you may be aware, accreditation is a hot issue in reauthorization. Eventually, I think, all of us will be involved in AQUIP. Following is the announcement of the 2002 Kansas Award for Excellence Conference and Awards Banquet.
The 2002 Kansas Award for Excellence Conference and Awards Banquet will be held in Overland Park on November 7, 2002. All events are scheduled at the Doubletree Hotel at Corporate Woods. The full-day conference features a morning session called "The Baldrige Experience - A Kansas Perspective". The session will include a presentation by Gary George, Ph.D., Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Olathe Kansas. USD 233 in Olathe applied for the Baldrige Award, this year. A second session will feature a panel of three current and recent Baldrige Examiners from Kansas who will describe their experience at the national level. Roger Quayle, the Keynote Speaker for the evening Awards Banquet will complete the morning presentations with a description of his organization's journey to the Baldrige Award in 2000.
The noon Awards Luncheon features the presentation of the 2002 Best of Category Awards by Harry Hertz, the Director of the Baldrige National Quality Award Program. The Best of Category Award recognizes those organizations that performed best in one or more of the first six Categories of the Baldrige Criteria - Leadership, Strategic Planning, Customer & Market Focus, Information Management, Human Resource Focus, and Process Management. The leadership of these role model organizations will make presentations about their achievement during the afternoon Best Practices Conference that follows the luncheon.
The evening begins with a reception at 5:30 followed by the Awards Banquet at 6:30. Harry Hertz will address the banquet as will a representative of the Governor's office. Roger Quayle will present the Keynote Address. Mr. Quayle is Vice President Quality & Technology for OMI, Inc. Operations Management Incorporated, Inc. (OMI) received the Baldrige Award in the Service Category in 2000. They operate water treatment facilities all over the world - including two in Kansas.
The awards for the 2002 KAE Awards cycle will be presented at the conclusion of the evening. This year, 43 organizations representing manufacturing, service, health care, education, government, and business will be recognized at 3 levels of achievement, including the Kansas Excellence Award. For information about this event, contact the KAE office at (800) 743-6767.
